NATURAL STONEWORK AND MASONRY SERVICE
– Most Requested Projects –

Patios are built with 2″ thick Colorado red flagstone and set on compacted gravel, other materials available upon request.

Steps are built in a variety of styles to fit any slope, standard measurements are 7″ high x 14″ deep.

Dry stack walls are built up to 4′ high, any higher requires cinder block, rebar and mortar on a concrete footer.
Repairs – If you have an uneven patio, collapsed retaining wall or steps that wobble, it’s an easy fix. If the flagstone is less than two inches thick it will need to be replaced. Thicker flagstone settles better and is less likely to move or crack. Stone from old patios can be reused for retaining walls.
Landscaping and Other Services – Stone gardens, driveways (gravel or recycled asphalt), concrete slabs, cinder block walls, joint repair, trenches, drainage, weed control.
Benefits of Stonework – More usable space, prevent erosion and weeds, fire mitigation, re-direct water, snow melts faster, low maintenance, elegant, beautiful, built to last.
Why choose Redstone Masonry? – All work comes with a lifetime guarantee. If any stones become dislodged they will be re-leveled free of charge. This is a rare occurrence but the guarantee is offered anyway for peace of mind. I’ve been honing my craft since 2020 and making small adjustments to the formula to achieve the best result. I take pride in my work and choose not to delegate labor because it keeps overhead low and results consistent.
Contact – Estimates are free. Call, text or email for questions and scheduling. Estimates will not be given over the phone. Work proposal will be emailed after an evaluation of the site has been completed.

Process – Excavation starts after surveying the site and marking the perimeter. All roots are removed from the area and six inches of dirt is displaced or taken to a recycling center.
The trench is filled with gravel, four inches deep. This provides a solid foundation for the patio, prevents growth of weeds and allows water to seep through.
Gravel is leveled and flagstone or block is laid out with large, medium and small pieces distributed evenly. Flagstone is arranged so the space between them does not exceed one inch, block for retaining walls are flush.
Edges of the flagstone are cut as needed with a chop saw. This creates a uniform appearance and ensures a tight fit which prevents movement.
Excess stone is used as back fill for steps and retaining walls or discarded at a recycling center.
Flagstone is leveled from the highest point, usually by the side of the house. A very slight (unnoticeable) drop in level is used to direct water. Dry stack retaining walls are set with a gentle tilt backwards.
Gaps on patios are packed with crusher fines which harden over time but won’t crack like mortar. Retaining walls are back filled with dirt or gravel depending on preference.

Excerpts from Hagakure – Yamamoto Tsunetomo
1716
*
In Yui Shosetsu’s military instructions, “The Way of the Three Ultimates”, there is a passage on the character of karma. He received an oral teaching of about eighteen chapters concerning the Greater Bravery or Lesser Bravery. He neither wrote them down nor committed them to memory but rather forgot them completely. Then, in facing real situations, he acted on impulse and the things that he had learned became wisdom of his own. This is the character of karma.

Okubo Doko is said to have remarked: Everyone says that no masters of the arts will appear as the world comes to an end. This is something that I cannot claim to understand. Plants such as peonies, azaleas and camellias will be able to produce beautiful flowers, end of the world or not. If men would give some thought to this fact, they would understand. And if people took notice of the masters of even these times, they would be able to say that there are masters in the various arts. But people become imbued with the idea that the world has come to an end and no longer put forth any effort. This is a shame. There is no fault in the times.

A Very Brief History of Masonry
Stonemasonry is one of the oldest trades in human history, dating back to the Neolithic Revolution around 10,000 BC. Two notable examples of early works that are still intact are Skara Brae in Scotland and Stonehenge in England (both approximately 3000 BC).
Advanced stonemasonry emerged in ancient Egypt and culminated in the monumental structures that we all know and recognize. Incas developed remarkably precise polygonal stonework, as seen in Cusco’s walls, while Greek and Roman masons used cut stone for structures like aqueducts and temples.
During the Middle Ages, stonemasonry flourished in Gothic architecture, with master masons organizing into guilds to construct cathedrals featuring flying buttresses and intricate carvings. The Renaissance renewed classical styles, emphasizing symmetry and refined sculpture, exemplified by works like Michelangelo’s Pietà .

Personal Values – truth, strength, honor, courage, patience, endurance, resilience, dedication, vitality, independence, knowledge, wisdom, presence
Anti-Values – falsehood, entitlement, hedonism, cowardice, hubris, ignorance, illusion, conceit
Long term goals for the company – I plan to own and operate this business until I physically can’t, at which time I’ll train an apprentice or Redstone Masonry will die with me. I believe in scaling out, not up. I do masonry from early spring to late autumn and use the winter to study and work on other endeavors. Exponential growth is Western decadence, the proverbial carrot on a stick.
Acknowledgement of Patrons – I’ll always be grateful to the people who’ve had faith in my vision, welcomed me into their homes, fed me delicious food, trusted me to transform their properties and of course, paid for the service. Above all, I’m thankful for those egalitarian people who value human dignity over material wealth and perceived status. You embody true self confidence and you are beacons of light in the midst of our nascent, shadow-possessed culture.
